Notes

It’s exciting to have Paul Horn’s Concert Ensemble program well-recorded. It reaches people—as demonstrated by the overwhelming success of countless performances for public school, university, and community concert series across the nation. This ensemble presents a spectrum of art music for contemporary Americans. The music is now. In a world growing increasingly homogenized—where experiences seem to be more universal daily—this music has relevance. It represents all the beauty of the rapid synthesis that is occurring in contemporary American culture—a coming-together that is felt everywhere by seldom understood. So, too, is the ensemble, now. In a society faced with staggering problems—striving for alliance as well as for individualism—this ensemble has achieved a special identity. These men and women create a vast musical expression of oneness—an expression that embodies the love, truth and beauty of all great music. Only a leader of Paul’s musical integrity, experience, and intellect could draw it all together this way. I don’t know of anyone who has done it so well before. There are no pretenses here. Classics, jazz, rock, and pop—they’re all part of it in happy contrast or in unity. In one program the simple diversities of art music have transcended time, style, media—and men. Listen…
